Domain Transfer Checklist
First, make sure your domain has been registered or maintained at its current registrar for at least 60 days. All domains must follow ICANN (icann.org) policy, which requires that a domain be active for a minimum of 60 days at a service provider before being transferred. You can check the date of the domain when it was registered through any WHOIS lookup.
Next, make sure the administrative or registrant contact on your domain lists a valid email address that you can access. The "transfer approval" email will be sent there for verification purposes as the final confirmation. If you need to update the email address on the domain, contact the domain's current provider for their assistance.
Make sure the domain is "unlocked" at its current provider. This is a feature that is available for certain domains as a security measure to prevent any changes.
If you have domain privacy enabled for the domain, you will need to temporarily disable it. You will not receive the "transfer approval" email if privacy is enabled. Once the transfer has been completed, you can re-enable domain privacy.
You will need to request the EPP or Transfer Authorization Code. Every domain has its own individual code that is used to verify that you have access to the existing domain registration. Note that the transfer CANNOT proceed without the code. The code can be retrieved from the current service provider of the domain; it will be sent to you via the admin email address that you verified earlier in this checklist.
If you plan to create a website at Netfirms, you will need to update the nameservers to ns1.netfirms.com and ns2.netfirms.com prior to transferring the domain. No changes can be made to a domain once it enters its transfer process. (If you're unsure, leave the nameservers for the domain the way they are.)
